The Long Road

The Long Road

Are we getting more and more impatient these days?

We live in a world where we expect services to be delivered quickly; fast food, fast internet, instant news, TV on demand, speed dating. Sometimes we find it difficult to wait for 3 minutes to reheat our fast food without glancing at the timer every 10 seconds. We expect that promises of God should follow suit, as we all know some dishes are better served slow cooked.

Exodus 13v17-18 Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in orderly ranks out of the land of Egypt.

The Israelites could have taken a shorter route to the promise land but God decided to take them through a longer route because He cared for their wellbeing. A nation that has been in servitude for over 400s year is probably not in any position to confront wars. What is amazing in all this is that God decided for them and reasoned with their situation without their knowledge as a father would guide a toddler.

The bible gave us God’s reason for making the journey longer, so that they don’t get overwhelmed and go fall into captivity again. This explains why sometimes our life seems to be moving around the same circle, we move forward, we encounter problems then we give in, and then we start all over again because we have gone ahead of God’s plan and fallen victim of captivity (something that overwhelms) .

Let us not go ahead of God to obtain what He has promised. He is the one that promised it, He is the one that knows the optimum way to get to this promise.

The psalmist understands this when He said

You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. (Psalm 139:5)

What has God promised you that you are impatient to receive, is it a life partner? wait for the right time, God is preparing you to be a loving wife or husband so that you don’t end up in a bad marriage. Do you want to switch career now? Maybe going on some training before you embark on it may be great for the outcome of your career. Are you waiting to have your own child, maybe God in preparing you to be a patient parent as the child you will have may be very clever and will naturally push your buttons. God allows situations that we face to build our spiritual and even mental stamina so that we can overcome all obstacles that we encounter on the journey.

Don’t be too impatient; accept the long road if that is God’s plan for you.
